Our team in action

The great flood

On June 20, 2013, as floodwaters surged through High River, The Salvation Army sprang into immediate action. Our relief efforts quickly expanded beyond High River to support communities across Alberta including Drumheller, Medicine Hat, Calgary, and Blackie, providing pastoral care, emotional support, and practical assistance.

Working alongside a dedicated Community Response Unit (CRU) from Lethbridge and local High River corps members, we served meals to 300 people daily. As the crisis grew, The Salvation Army scaled up its operations across southern Alberta, establishing an incident command team with personnel from Alberta, British Columbia, and Ontario. At the height of the response, eight CRUs served up to 3,000 meals per day.

Over the following 12 weeks, our teams helped more than 50,000 people rebuild and recover from the devastating flood.
